01

Purpose of oil filtration

Filtration separates suspended particles from a liquid phase. Clarity target, contaminant type, temperature, viscosity, and downstream process determine system requirements.

02

Media and cake

Oil passes through filtration media while solids are retained and form a cake layer. The media must suit the oil, temperature, chemical cleaning, and quality target.

03

Effects of viscosity and temperature

Temperature changes can alter viscosity and flow behavior. Temperature limits, safety, and product quality should follow process design and datasheets.

04

Test before selecting a configuration

Samples, solids loading, filtrate target, cycle, cleaning, contact materials, and cake disposal should be reviewed. This article explains general principles and does not prescribe a model for every oil type.
